Although relatively young, Istine have made a significant impact with wine writers over the last 4 to 5 years.
In 2017 Istine won the prestigious “Up-and-Coming Winery” award from Gambero Rosso, and have maintained consistently high scores across all their wines from then on.
With four single vineyards across Radda and Gaiole, each has its own well-distinguished characteristics. What they have in common is high altitude and the prevalently rocky soil, a perfect combination for Sangiovese. Freshness, elegance, minerality and harmony are the key factors across each of these outstanding wines.
Istine are one of the few producers making single vineyard Chianti Classico, of which less than 1,500 bottles are produced of each! Stock has arrived this week including the 2019 vintage Chianti Classico, and 2017 Levigne Chianti Classico Riserva which has received reviews of 97points.
Istine 2019 ‘Vigna Casanova dell’Aia Chianti Classico DOCG

The 2019 Chianti Classico Vigna Casanova dell’Aia is a dark, ample wine. Succulent dark cherry, plum, lavender and spice open first, showing the more virile side of Sangiovese off to great effect. The 2019 builds effortlessly in the glass as the flavors and tannins gain energy with air. Casanova dell’Aia is located closer to Radda than Vigna Istine and yields a decidedly powerful expression of the village.

The 2019 Chianti Classico Vigna Istine is stellar. A classic Radda wine, the Vigna Istine is all finesse. Deeply pitched aromatics make a strong first impression. Bright red cherry, rose petal, spice, cedar and new leather all meld together in a wine of tremendous beauty and resonance. Silky, pliant and wonderfully expressive, the Vigna Istine is a winner from Angela Fronti.

The 2019 Chianti Classico Vigna Cavarchione is, along with the Riserva, one of most powerful of the Chianti Classicos in this range. A wine of breadth and dimension, the Cavarchione is driven by bright acids and a whole range of earthy, savory flavors. Game, wild herbs, tobacco, incense and plum all develop in the glass. The tannins need time to soften, naturally, but there is a ton to explore here.

Istine 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Levigne

The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Levigne is another positively stunning wine in this range. Ample and explosive in the glass, with tremendous resonance, the 2017 is off the charts gorgeous. To be sure, the Riserva is a big, rich wine, but it also offers plenty of Sangiovese character to please purists. Macerated dark cherry, spice, leather, menthol and a whole range of balsamic inflections fill out the layers in a dramatic, towering Chianti Classico Riserva. In a word: stunning.
